Artificial Intelligence and Journalism: Between Help and Threat

Artificial intelligence is already part of many newsrooms. From editorial assistants to predictive audience analysis, AI promises efficiency, but also raises ethical dilemmas.

Tools such as ChatGPT (from OpenAI), Bard (from Google), and Perplexity are used by journalists to draft documents, summarize documents, search for sources, and translate in real time. The Guardian, El País, and Forbes have already experimented with generative AI in content production.

According to the Nieman Lab's "Generative AI in Newsrooms" report (2023), 45% of digital media outlets in the US have implemented AI in their workflows. 72% report improvements in efficiency, but also express concern about errors, bias, and the loss of human creativity.

UNESCO, in its 2023 guide "Artificial Intelligence and Journalism Ethics," warns that the use of AI must be governed by principles of transparency, truthfulness, and editorial responsibility to avoid a crisis of trust in the media.

Conclusion

AI can be a powerful ally for journalism if used ethically. The challenge is to balance automation with humanity, efficiency with integrity.
